Estas seis preguntas fueron realizadas a tres escritores, tres científicos y dos personas de los medios de comunicación por el periódico The Guardian. Es curioso leer las respuestas, especialmente las de los científicos.

A continuación se puede leer un artículo llamado “The new age of ignorance” de Tim Adams, en el que se discute si la brecha que divide las “ciencias” de las “letras” es mayor ahora que antes.

‘Newspapers are getting rid of all their science pages; they are jettisoning all their science staff. The feeling is people don’t want to read it.’

The implications of this, and the resultant general scientific illiteracy, she believes, are possibly catastrophic. Forty-two per cent of Americans in a recent survey said they believed that humans had been on Earth since the beginning of time. ‘A geophysicist friend suggests we are at a critical crossroads just like the start of the Renaissance,’ Angier says, ‘where you couldn’t just leave reading and writing to the kings and priests anymore. Ordinary people have to keep up. In the world we live in, the new economy, you have to become scientifically literate or you will fall quickly from view.’

Está claro que cada vez se impone más la idea de que la ciencia es un tema para especialistas, que tiene poca o ninguna relevancia en la vida de las “personas normales”. Que inventen ellos. Que piensen ellos.

Ya lo puse aquí hace un año más o menos, pero merece la pena leerlo otra vez:

“In a reversal of all historic and even prehistoric precedent, it is normal today to consider people who are more concerned with cosmic reality than with making money, to be out of touch and unrealistic. As a people, we now have the scientific ability to see so much more deeply into the universe than ancient people, yet we experience it so much less and connect with it almost not at all. This widespread cultural INDIFFERENCE TO THE UNIVERSE is a staggering reality of our time – and possibly our biggest mental handicap in solving global problems.”
